D70 underexposes ?
In my opinion it does. Nikon calls it “Preserving Highlights”, but what you get in the end is an image which needs brightness correction, hence I call it “underexposure”. First few months of my experience with D70 will be remembered as Point and Shoot and Curve, due to the amount of “curving” I’ve been doing in photoshop post-processing almost 80% of my pictures.
My first solution was to shoot with +0.3EV. That “improved” exposure in some situations but still wasn’t enough in others. +0.5EV just didn’t seem right under certain lighting conditions while worked better than +0.3EV under the others. Finally I opted for a custom curve.
After a little bit of research I decided to go with the Fotogenetic Custom Tone Curves. They seem to be “curving” images in exactly the same way I’ve been “curving” then in photoshop.

I honestly don’t remember whether I went with the Point and Shoot curve or EV3, I suggest you try both and see whichever one works better for you. Nevertheless, loading custom curve almost eliminated post-processing of my images. I still do occasional crops, but after tweaking few other custom settings I’m very pleased with the straight out of the camera images my D70 now delivers.
