Hello,
I handling d300 files on macbook pro (2.4ghz, 4gb ram, 320gb 7200, win7) without any problems, but couple days ago my new d3x is arrived and I have serius problem with performance. Any advice to speed up CNX 2.2?

Regards,
Benis

Vadim, great article! I'm working out these details for a machine to be compatible with Capture NX2 and this helps. Do you have any thoughts on upgrading again, for moderate cost?

Wouldn't it be nice if ATI would make us graphics processors optimized to perform all of the CNX2 and image processing functions aboard the graphics processors themselves?

I think i should say a couple of things..

1. Photoshop is hardcoded to use only 2 cores. if you have a quad, open up task manager and you'll see that only two cores are working.

2. I know that NX somehow uses 4 cores. But I'm having doubts that it is in a good way.

3. I hope that those having 6GB of RAM uses 64Bit OS or almost half the RAM will never be used.

4. Graphics cards are not involved when it comes to photography and displaying 2D images. However you should consider using a graphics card anyways because if you use onboard graphics curcuits on you will have to share your RAM with that function which means you'll lose 25% memory speed performance. At least.

A little late but.. still valid info. I got a 9450 and 4GB and it think the performance in NX sucks. But it's still the best and only raw converter i use.

The Sony KDS-60A2000 HDTV is very energy efficient, only 0.31 watts on standby

Hayo,
Let me know how it works out for you. I'm thinking about upgrading my Dual to a Quad, since Kluso (on dpreview) reported a lot better timings on it. I'm just waiting for the Q9450 to come down in price a little more (it already dropped $100 since this discussion started... perhaps another $100 and I'll pick one up :)

Gustavo,
That is correct, I don't believe that graphics card matters when it comes to static image processing, therefore I did not mention it at all.

Hi Vadim,

Great report. i have noticed you didn´t mention any graphics card in your configuration. Do you consider that this is not relevant or the Capture Nx or PS CS3 performance. Thank you in advance for your response. I am considering upgrade my configuration and your opinion is important.

Vadim,

We currently have a similar PC as you started out with. I too find NX slow, but workable when editing a small number of images.
We have decided to take a completely different upgrade route than you though. Instead of building a faster PC, we decided to go for something completely different: a Mac Pro.

While much more expensive, the specs of the machine we ordered are to dream of:
* 2x Quad Core 3.2GHz
* 6 GB Memory
* 3x320GB SATA HD
* Nvidia 8800 GT Video card

I can't wait to see how fast NX is going to run on it :-)

Hey Andriy, thanks for your note! :) Before you upgrade, take a look at this thread:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1034&thread=27613333&page=2
I'm finding out that quads might actually outperform duals. So, I may end up going with a quad. Although so far in that thread we only compared twice as expensive quad (approx $400) vs my $200 E6850.

Hey Vadim,
I got to your site after reading your post at DPR. I see you have the same problem with you last name as me ;)
This is very nice specs you've provided for NX, I'm struggling myself with older system as well. Gotta do something soon with it.
I'll get back to check your pics later.
